What I Learned on the Forums This Week 13

forums

This weeks On the Forums has been brought to you by sleep deprivation! I’ve already forgotten what I wrote but hopefully its entertaining in some form or another! Also this week we bring you not one but 10 Hero Threads! Woooo!

Retribution didn’t launch with a Battle Engine or a Colossal!!

This weird factoid doesn’t come to us from the Ret forums but rather from other weird spaces of the Forums. Now I’m sure most of you are thinking ‘yeah, no shit they didn’t, those models didn’t even exist what Ret was released. Hell Mark II didn’t even fully exist yet’ but what you’re missing is that something something relevant explanation. Continue reading

Always have a Game Plan: Model Placement

OverloadOnline banner
This is a guest post from Owen at farfaraway.org.

I believe model placement is one of the fundamental things that differentiates beginners from more experienced players. This post looks at some of the different factors that impact on the placement of individual models, both as part of a unit and when they move individually. Before I launch into the specifics of placement let’s talk about the anatomy of a model… no, no, not like that!

Hacking the Cortex: The Other Mantra

Cortex Banner

“Slow down and keep winning” is the first mantra that I’ve drilled into my mind for tournaments. It’s designed to stop the jitters and The Fear from making me make rash decisions or go for assassinations when I’m already safely winning on attrition.

The other is the one more likely to be written on the back of my hand, and perhaps more likely to lose me games if I ignore it.

That mantra is “CCLD” – Confident, Cocky, Lazy, Dead.

It’s in the Blood #4 Lesser Used Models

Unfortunately I’ve only gotten a few games in with Grim2 over the last few weeks so I don’t have much in the way of new insight on how to play him. I can drop this mind blowing fact on you though: Winter Trolls still aren’t worth the points. Instead of dwelling on that fact though I’m going to talk about some models that I don’t think Troll players include in their lists often enough. This isn’t to say that some of these models aren’t seeing play right now or that every, or even most, list you build should have them. Instead I’m saying that these are some options Trolls have that I don’t think people take advantage of nearly as often as they should. Continue reading

What I Learned on the Forums This Week 12

forums

Coming up with quips to put here is becoming surprisingly difficult. Here’s hoping for a second wind around week 15!

Dear Privateer Press I will buy X if you do Y.

As we all know the best way to communicate with Privateer Press is by posting open letters on the forums since they definitely all read them. Now say you really want a new model designed or want a model changed in some way to make it better? Continue reading

Nemesis: The Lich. 12 – In The End…

nemesis

…progress is acheived by the man who does things.” – Theodore Roosevelt

Finally, we reach an end point. This will be my final discussion of Lich2, unless there is some kind of huge change in how his lists are built, or models that are effective against him. I may do a year in review after the next Hordes book if it’s really changed how the game is played in respect to the big bad.

Today I’m going to look at a single Mercenaries list, briefly discuss Minions, and ask a few questions. Formatting will be a bit weird because of it!

Hacking the Cortex: The Fear

Cortex Banner

“I have learned over the years that when one’s mind is made up, this diminishes fear; knowing what must be done does away with fear.” –  Rosa Parks

How to Train your Warjack reverts back to Hacking the Cortex this week. As training for the WTC heats up, my thoughts are increasingly on the tournament prep side of things, so we’re back to crunch over fluff. The next few will be talking about my own personal attempts to grow as a player. This week, we talk about The Fear – the intimidation factor that happens when you face the players that are the established Big Deals In Your Local Meta.

What I Learned on the Forums This Week 11

forums

Welcome back for another installment in my weekly community service project. They say I can stop once I’ve mad the Forums a sane and reasonable place! I’m sure that will be any day now.

Including Mercs and/or Minions in your list makes you a traitor!

The first clue was obviously the existence of Magnus the traitor! It’s like they’re not even trying to be subtle. Did you want to play whatever models you wanted based on their individual merit rather than exclusively friendly faction models? Well you’re doing it wrong! Continue reading

Nemesis: 13 – Cryx vs. Clocks, On Angels and Dennys

nemesis

You cannot fight against the future. Time is on our side. W.E. Gladstone

Tick. Tock. Tick. Tock. Now we’ve seen the faction of the clock. Cyriss has been released to fanfare and fandom at Lock and Load. The limited release faction has been met with a mixture of feelings from Mweh the models won’t ever be released to Mweh they are going to break and end the game. I actually think they are startlingly well balanced. Since Gargantuans, Privateer Press has been kicking their game design and balance chops into overdrive, in my opinion. They are though, a battlegroup faction, with a bit of a melee bent. So they are, almost by definition, Cryx bait. This week I’m going to try to build lists that I think will have a solid Cryx game with them.
