Hacking the Cortex: Stuck in the meta with you

Cortex Banner

The wider warmachine meta keeps on widening. As books release and factions get more and more tools, every non-minions faction is reaching a point where they can build a competitive list that utilizes any strategy you can think of. I’ve seen people “Cryxing” with Trolls and Menoth, and I’ve Cygnar’d with Cryx. Can list chicken be avoided in a world such as this? If it must happen, how do we mitigate it?

There’s skews to the left of me, weirdness to the right.
Here I am, stuck in the meta with you.

New England Team Tournament Report Pt. 1

This past weekend I played in the New England Team Tournament at Captain Con and went 4-1 over the course of the day with my team, Dark Omen 2, finished fifth out of 24 with a 3-2 record. My team was Shane York playing Khador with Sorscha2 and Vlad1 and Matt K rocking his Convergence with Mother and Father. It was an absolute blast even if playing 5 rounds in one day made me a zombie. I thought I’d do a bit of a write up about my games hitting on the highlights. These won’t be comprehensive but hopefully they’re interesting and apologies to my opponents if I forgot your name or something relevant from our game. I was pretty jet lagged and tired for a lot of the event. Plus my memory for names is just appalling. In summary: I’m the worst and here are some battle reports.

Hacking the Cortex: Tempo, Tempo.

I’ve been thinking a lot this week about “my playstyle”. “Playstyle” is one of those elusive concepts in gaming that you hear a lot, but is often difficult to pin down. It was only this week that I actually figured out what mine was, even after years of playing to that style in CCGs, Wargames, and basically every other kind of game that would allow it.

How do the Factions of Hordes play?

Startin Armies

Here I am, on the road again…

Read the previous two posts here to get an introduction to the game itself, and here to have a look at Warmachine Factions.

Today we are going to talk about Hordes Factions. Warmachine is more about resource management and infantry, Hordes is all about big smashy monsters and trying keep control of them when you push them to go wild on the enemy. Fury is the resource of this twin system to Warmachine, in which your warbeasts generate the resource, and your warlock takes back to use as both a defensive mechanic and to power their spells. The first rule of Hordes is always leave 2 fury on your warlock! It will keep you alive!

It’s in the Blood #10 Pairing with Runes of War Pt. 4

We’ve reached the end of our little trip and we couldn’t end with a better warlock to talk about. This week we’ll be talking about the ‘lock who I believe is the best in all of Trollbloods. She has an amazing set of abilities and a truly ridiculous Feat. I am, of course, talking about Trollbloods very own ugly duckling: Grissel1. For the purposes of this article we will be talking about a very specific style of Grissel1 and I will be assuming you are playing that or at least something very similar. So without further delay lets get started.

It’s in the Blood #9 Pairing with Runes of War Pt. 3

Hello again dear reader! It’s time for the penultimate article in our series on lists to pair with Runes of War. This time we’ll be talking about everyone’s favorite bounty hunter: Grim Angus! This guy is pretty amazing and one of the best turd polishers in Trollbloods so there are a lot of options for what could go in a Grim Angus list. This week we’ll be talking about how to build him to cover Runes of War’s problem match ups as well as what abilities he has that makes him so great as a second list. Without further delay lets get down to business!

It’s in the Blood #8 Pairing with Runes of War Pt. 2

This week we’re going to talk about Madrak2 and in the process we’re going to forget about almost everything I talked about last week! My original plan of pairing Madrak2 with Runes of War came about as part of a different thought process than what I am covering here. Instead of writing a Madrak2 list to cover Runes of War’s bad match ups I went for writing a good all around list that asks a very different question than Runes to cause problems for your opponent. I’ll cover what exactly I mean by this later in the article. Let’s get this started!

It’s In the Blood #7 Pairing With Runes of War Pt. 1

It has been a really long time since I last wrote one of these. Sorry about that…

I have returned, however briefly, to give you a handful of articles related somewhat indirectly to what I consider the best list in Trollbloods. That list, which the title has already spoiled, is Doomshaper1’s theme force: Runes of War. This series isn’t actually going to talk about Runes of War all that much since many people have already done that far better than I could. Instead, we’re going to talk about the problem of what list should be taken alongside Runes of War to a Steamroller tournament. Generally you want your second list to cover bad match ups for your first list so in our first article we’re going to talk about what match ups present problems for Runes of War.
