The Scrutator Semper Chronicles IX

Chapter One: The Relics of Saint Malathric

Part Nine: Endgame Showdown Faceoff

“”My tabard is red
Yours is blue
I’m a godsworn knight
And so are you.”

High Exemplar Gavram Kreoss crumpled up the latest attempt and threw it onto the debris in the corner of his tent. Words were so meaningless in the face of such feeling. Even now, when the battle would soon be joined, he was unable to think, unable to speak. His dreams were haunted by her face, even the look of scorn she had poured on him as he fell before her spear.

He had been captured by her after their skirmish, in more ways than one. Yes, there had been literal manacles on his hands and feet, but her coppery hair and haughty visage had chained his heart. Not since childhood had he felt such emotion. The Exemplinarium – that famed academy which drills all sympathy and humanity out of initiates to the strong arm order of the Protectorate – had had no room for weakness. Continue reading

What I Learned on the Forums This Week 49

forums

Hello dearest reader! Sorry for the lack of an update last week, real life got in the way. I am unfortunately burdened with the undesirable task of telling you that there won’t be a new On the Forums next week either because I’ll be partying in central Europe. Now that I’m rich and famous from my blog writing career I don’t have as much time for you little people anymore. It’s all fancy European parties and crazy drug fueled raves for me. I don’t even read the Forums anymore. I have a team of crack Chinese analysts do that for me. They’re the best in the business I hear and while sometimes their Syntax is a little off I’m sure they’ll do a good task.

Hacking the Cortex: The Pendulum

Today, I’m going to get started on the Tempo series. There have been several abandoned attempts to write the first article in the series, but in the end the only way to write something is to put one word after the last one until you’ve got a thing. To hell with organised thoughts, I’ll organise them after they exist, not before!

So onward, to the first of what will likely be many metaphors/analogies/similes wielded in my attempts to articulate tempo.

Hacking the Cortex: Imagination is more important than knowledge

Cortex Banner

Tempo is really hard to write about.

Instead of sharing something half baked, I’m going to talk about something I’ve just started lecturing on – Creativity. As I was researching the lectures, my mind started its inevitable wander into “I wonder how this might apply to Warmachine.”

I’ve been doing a lot of testing of outside-the-Cryx box lists in recent months. My Terminus list is but one of many that have gone through the paces, and there are many more lined up now that Vengeance models are starting to exist. As has been noted often recently, basically everyone worth worrying about at a tournament has a plan for “standard Cryx”, and I’m not entirely convinced that “Cryx Harder” is enough any more. It can work, but that only means the anti Cryx meta has to anti-Cryx harder. And so, I’m looking elsewhere, and thinking a lot about Creativity itself and how I can harness my own.

What I Learned on the Forums This Week 48

forums

Man I really left this until the last minute! I don’t know about you guys but I’m only just waking up after that crazy one year anniversary part for What I Learned on the Forums This Week. I’m sure we can all agree that things got a little out of hand. I may have signed up to some sort of secret cabal determined to destroy the Forums so that a new better internet discussion community can take it’s place. I’m not sure, though, the last week is all a bit of a blur. I’m sure they’ll send me there newsletter to let me know what’s up. Now let’s see what was happening on the internet while I was celebrating Andrew W.K. Style.

What I Learned on the Forums This Week 47

forums

I don’t know if you guys noticed or not but this is a very special On the Forums this week. This is our one year anniversary. I published the first On the Forums a year ago tomorrow and I’ve had one almost every week since. That’s a bit of a milestone. I’ve mentioned it before but this series started out as me just ranting about whatever I had read that day while we were in the pub after WTC practice evenings and when it was suggested I write my rants up for this blog I didn’t expect it to last more than a few weeks. I certainly didn’t anticipate doing this a year later. Frankly if it wasn’t for the positive feedback and encouragement I get from you guys I’d have stopped doing this a long time ago. Thanks for the support! Now, that’s enough lovey dovey shit, let’s get motherfucking angry about some shit that doesn’t really matter!

Hacking the Cortex: Tempo, Tempo.

I’ve been thinking a lot this week about “my playstyle”. “Playstyle” is one of those elusive concepts in gaming that you hear a lot, but is often difficult to pin down. It was only this week that I actually figured out what mine was, even after years of playing to that style in CCGs, Wargames, and basically every other kind of game that would allow it.
