The Scrutator Semper Chronicles – Chapter 2 Introduction

Welcome to Chapter Two of the Scrutator Semper Chronicles, an ongoing account of campaigns I have played against various opponents using the ANNIHILATION campaign system for Warmachine and Hordes devised by Owen Conlan. This time around I will be playing against Overload Online’s very own Stuart and his Trollbloods. The story of the campaign is that Scrutator Semper, lord and master of the city of Merwynn in war-torn Llael, plans to raze the wild lands to the north of Merwynn. In their place he will construct the Great Works, a sewage works/temple complex which will venerate Menoth and provide clean drinking water to the populace of Merwynn. His plans will incidentally destroy the homeland of many thousand of non-humans, which is not such a concern for him. Nevertheless the warlocks of the United Kriels have heard the call of distress and rally to fight the Menites. They will war over THE BROWN LAND in this chapter.

Since the Scars of Caen Halfaug league was running when we decided to start the campaign, we agreed to use some of the rules and scenarios, which we thought would adequately represent a magical swamp-like and treacherous forest which would resist the Menite efforts to manipulate it. It fit the planned story pretty well, since Stu was playing Purist and I was playing Opportunist. This also explains the presence of light artillery pieces in the lists which we prepared below. Even though the campaign would be for fun rather than competitive practice, at this stage we both have little time for playing games below 50 points, so we agreed to play 4 games at 50 points rather than the usual 15,25,35,50 that the ANNIHILATION rules has. As a result, we ended up making a 160 point list to start with, with 3 warcasters/warlocks and loads and loads of stuff. The best way to do it seems to be to make a 50 point list for each, double up on important units and then add in bits and bobs that would be useful. I wish I had thought of this at the time instead of throwing together whatever occurred to me at the time!

I’ve just finished a long run of playing nothing but the various incarnations of Kreoss, so I was eager to play other warcasters (also in the SSC continuity, Kreoss is missing presumed dead, but that’s neither here nor there!). The last time I’ve played Grand Scrutator Severius regularly was early 2013, so I’m eager to play him again and he has the same “fixer” elements to him that Kreoss does, which should come in handy for the latter part of the campaign when I don’t have as much to choose from! For the other two ‘casters I went with Reznik and Vindictus, for a number of reasons. I really like Reznik against Hordes, and I have a tier 4 Judgement of Fire theme force list that I want to practise a lot. As for Vindictus, he’s someone I’ve thought about a lot but never given much time towards. Again, his theme force appeals to me for the ridiculous Errant-ness of it all but I really just want to give him a go in a real game, since he’s only appeared on Vassal for me so far. I have recently finished painting the two of them, and along with Severius I figured that if Scrutator Semper needed two unscrupulous individuals to oust a load of non-humans from some valuable tracts of land, he need look no further, he’s found the best!

So I had my three warcasters, and theme forces in mind for two of them. This brought me up near the 100 point mark, with two units of Cleansers and Errants and a bunch of warjacks. Two units of Zealots went in because they are useful for scenario and likely to be killed like flies. Other support elements that I’ve grown very used to over the past year included the Covenant, Gorman and Rhupert. These provide enough denial to give me hope against whatever brutal stuff Stu throws my way. The tendency towards Multiple Activation lists in the podcastosphere at the moment persuaded me to add in a lot of utility solos like Nicia, Saxon Orrick, the Allegiants and the Errant Seneschals too, in the hope they might pick off some of Stu’s support staff.

* Krielstone Stone Scribe Elder (1pts)
Krielstone Bearer and 3 Stone Scribes (3pts)

That’s a lot of trolls! Stu is clearly planning for a Grim2 theme force with those Thumper Crews and Scouts, which is unsurprising because under the Halfaug rules as a Purist they lose the Light Artillery rule and therefore become crazy killing machines. My previous experience against that theme force has left me with a keen sense of foreboding. He’s been talking a good talk about Calandra for a long time now and I guess it’s time to see whether she’s all she’s cracked up to be. I’ve never played against her before but I’ve heard some crazy things. Grissel2 is another relative unknown, but it seems like I’ll want to resort to Reznik against her to get through a lot of Hyper-Aggressive Champions.

This campaign seems like it’ll be a lot different from my previous one against Duggy. Trolls are so much more resilient, and the ways to win against them are so different than versus Cygnar. They’re more survivable than Protectorate by far, and to be honest I could count the amount of times I’ve beaten Stu on a blind butcher’s hand!

So I hope you enjoy Chapter 2 of the Scrutator Semper Chronicles. The installments will not be too regular as we haven’t finished the campaign yet, but as and when we play the games there will be two parts per game. The first part will be the ongoing story of Scrutator Semper’s attempt to ruthlessly crush an indigenous population, and the second part will be a battle report co-written by myself and Stu. We’ve got Game 1 under our belt already, so look out for Part 1 and 2 on Monday and Friday!

  1. Looks like fun, I’ve always intended to kick a campaign off but it never seems to get out of the thinking stage, looking forward to seeing how it goes down!

  2. Well if I had to come up with a system myself it would never have gotten off the ground. Thankfully Owen made the ANNIHILATION system. Getting the games in was the real hurdle for me, the first campaign took over a year to finish. We’ve already gotten one game in of this new campaign and the second game is tomorrow. So far on schedule!
