Warpcon 2014 – Game one.

This weekend, Cork was host to the first big Warmachine and Hordes event of the Irish Calender, Warpcon 2014, which is held every year in UCC. 25 players traveled from across Ireland to take part, trekking from as far away as 2 hours on the train. It’s a small country ok?

The final faction representation was as follows:

4 Cryx
4 Trolls
4 Khador
4 Cygnar
2 Circle
2 Minions
2 Menoth
1 Legion
1 Retribution
1 Skorne

A pretty good spread, all but Mercs and Convergence represented. With only one Legion player, readers of my previous pieces may believe this to be me. However, after a solid 6 months of practicing Legion in tournaments and friendlies, I decided two days before kick-off to swap to Khador, taking a list I’d played six times, and a list I’d played once the night before the event. Good plan right?

The Lists:

Forward Kommander Sorscha (*6pts)
* Conquest (19pts)
* Sylys Wyshnalyrr, the Seeker (2pts)
Great Bears of Gallowswood (5pts)
Greygore Boomhowler & Co. (Boomhowler and 9 Grunts) (9pts)
Lady Aiyana & Master Holt (4pts)
Winter Guard Infantry (Leader and 9 Grunts) (6pts)
* Winter Guard Infantry Officer & Standard (2pts)
* 3 Winter Guard Infantry Rocketeers (3pts)
Eiryss, Angel of Retribution (3pts)
Kovnik Jozef Grigorovich (2pts)
Reinholdt, Gobber Speculator (1pts)

My first list is an eSorscha list I’ve been working on as my first foray into Khador. I’m a big fan of her as a caster, she’s got a solid spell list, a great feat and she turns the Deathstar up to silly levels. While High Def infantry has lost a lot of its luster recently, as the meta shifts towards Colossal play and the need to crack them, the Deathstar is still a solid unit. Conquest is a big “Maybe” in this list for me, after this weekend. More on that later though.

Vladimir Tzepesci, the Dark Champion (*5pts)
* Drago (8pts)
* War dog (1pts)
Cylena Raefyll & Nyss Hunters (Cylena and 9 Grunts) (10pts)
* Koldun Kapitan Valachev (2pts)
Doom Reavers (Leader and 5 Grunts) (6pts)
Doom Reavers (Leader and 5 Grunts) (6pts)
Iron Fang Pikemen (Leader and 9 Grunts) (8pts)
* Iron Fang Pikemen Officer & Standard (2pts)
Kayazy Eliminators (Leader and Grunt) (3pts)
Iron Fang Kovnik (2pts)
Man-o-war Drakhun (with dismount) (5pts)
Saxon Orrik (2pts)

My second list is designed for specific matchups, mainly those that are slow, have little shooting, or can’t handle Turn 2 feated Doomreavers. Trolls (especially Runes of War), certain Circle lists, Khador, Skorne. It jams hard and fast with Doomreavers on Turn 2 (charging most of the time) and then relies on Hand of Fate to consistently win on attrition by grinding down my opponent through superior dice manipulation. Also Vlad’s a rockstar.

So 80’s.

Game 1.

After the breakfast rolls are eaten, the coffees drunk and the tables arranged, the drawings are made. I’m up against Mark, who’s the only Ret player at the event. He’s got a lovely white and red paint scheme on his Ret, and his two lists are Ossyan and Rahn.

With so much shooting on my opponent’s side, I’ll be dropping eSorscha. He’s got no Mage Hunter Strike Force, which means she’ll be sitting pretty behind Conquest all day. I fully expect him to drop Ossyan, because of my Colossal, and he does.

Lord Arcanist Ossyan (*6pts)
* Banshee (10pts)
* Discordia (10pts)
Dawnguard Invictors (Leader and 9 Grunts) (10pts)
* Dawnguard Invictor Officer & Standard (2pts)
Mage Hunter Infiltrators (Leader and 9 Grunts) (8pts)
Stormfall Archers (Leader and 3 Grunts) (5pts)
Stormfall Archers (Leader and 3 Grunts) (5pts)
Arcanist (1pts)
Eiryss, Angel of Retribution (3pts)
Mage Hunter Assassin (2pts)

The Scenario is 2014 Destruction, so a nice central zone with two objectives to destroy. I win the roll to go first.

Deployment:

Conquest goes centrally, flanked by the Boomhowlers on both sides with a slot on the left side for Sorscha, Sylys and Reinholdt. Ayana and Holt go behind them on the left. The Bears take the right side, the Deathstar on the left. Eyriss AD’s centrally.

My opponent deploys the Banshee opposite my Bears, Discordia centrally surrounded by the Invictors. There’s a wall just outside the killbox, which is likely where Ossyan will be heading and he gets a unit of Stormfalls as backup. The Infiltrators also go opposite the bears along with the Mage Hunter Assassin and the Arcanist. One unit of Stormfalls deploy just behind a big hill, and Eyriss ADs on the same side, opposite my Winterguard Deathstar.

Turn 1 – Khador:

I give one to Conquest. The Boomhowlers run into the zone, Conquest runs up behind them. Sorscha gives Iron Flesh to the Winterguard, advances and gives them Desperate Pace. Her support runs up behind her. Ayana and Holt run up to her left, the Bears run so that they’re behind a Forest and unable to be seen by the Infiltrators and the Assassin.

The Winterguard get Tough from Joe and run onto the left side.

Turn 1 – Retribution:

My opponents starts by allocating two to Discordia. He advances Eyriss off the Hill and shoots Iron Flesh off the Winterguard, and forces a Rocket to tough. The Stormfall Archers by her float Snipe shots into the unit, killing 4 once the smoke clears. Discordia runs and imprints. Ossyan puts Shatter Storm on the Invictors and advances towards the wall, then puts quicken on the Infiltrators. They run towards the Bears and the Boomhowlers. The Assassin goes on a heavy flank around the forest by the Bears. The other unit of Stormfalls moves to the wall with Ossyan and floats some shots at the Boomhowlers, toughing one and killing another. The Invictors run to be within 3″ of Discordia, gathering in the protection of her Imprint. The Arcanist power boosts the Banshee, that runs to the wall by Ossyan.

Turn 2 – Khador:

My objectives for this turn  are to kill Eyriss, kill some Stormfalls and cover the Infiltrators in delicious jam. I’ll be putting some damage on Discordia as well through the Big Conquest Gun, so I allocate him two focus.

Joe advances first, gives the Winterguard boosted attacks rolls and is out of range of an Invictor with his Hand Cannon. The Winterguard get Bob and Weave and advance, with the 3 rockets aiming. They unleash Sprays and Rockets and solid shots and when they’re done, 3 Stormfalls and Eyriss are dead. Initial plan succeeded. The Boomhowlers Run/Charge and get the tasty jam started, jamming right up into the end of the zone and to the right on my side, blocking the Infiltrators. Conquest advances behind them and puts a boosted shot into Discordia and rolls Crit Devastation, throwing her back and killing a couple of Invictors with the collateral damage. The Bears advance round behind the Boomhowlers, ready to go to work on any Infiltrators that charge in. Aiyana and Holt stealth up and are out of range of some Invictors.

Turn 2 – Retribution:

I’m expecting the feat this turn, I’m not sure if he can take out Conquest with what he has left, but I’d still expect it. He upkeeps quicken and lets Shatterstorm drop. Discordia gets 3 focus and shakes knockdown. The Banshee gets 2. The remaining Stormfall on the left side fires a shot into the Winterguard, killing another. Discordia runs and Imprints again. The Invictors walk forward into the bubble, and fire some shots. I lose a few Winterguard and a couple of Boomhowlers. Ossyan shoots his objective and does a few damage as do a couple of the Invictors. The Infiltrators charge into the Boomhowlers and take a few more out. The Banshee fires at something and kills it. He’s got some Invictors in the zone, as well as Discordia and his objective has taken around 8 damage. The Assassin continues her mad flank and is now about 20″ from Sorscha, behind a forest.

Turn 3 – Khador:

No feat from Ossyan means I now have another turn to Attrition down his threats to Conquest and bully the game out with my giant stompy robot. I start by allocating him two focus, Sorscha puts Boundless Charge on him and advances towards the zone. Reinholdt and Sylys follow. Ayana and Holt activate, Ayana kissing the Banshee, Holt knocking off an Invictor despite Defensive Line.

Conquest goes charging and easily smashes Discordia into a pile of Myrmidon bits. One heavy done and my Feat is still available. The Winterguard continue their rampage, eliminating the last Stormfall from the left unit and killing some Invictors. The Boomhowlers slap a few more down, and the Bears charge in and polish off a couple of Infiltrators. With only 4 Stormfalls and 5 unengaged Invictors, my opponent is not going to be able to finish Conquest off without some huge dice, so I feel pretty secure in being able to dominate the game with him.

Such a bully.

Turn 3 – Retribution:

It’s not looking good, as there’s a Conquest in the zone and he’s on full health. Ossyan gives 2 to the Banshee and Feats then boosts a shot into Conquest. The Stormfalls fire into Conquest, as does the Banshee. After all the shooting is done, Conquest has taken about 40% damage, which is pretty impressive considering he shot it with about 6 things.

His Invictors kill his objective, earning him 1 CP. The infiltrators kill a Bear and some Boomhowlers, and the Assassin runs to within 8″ of Sorscha, inside the Killbox which is actually quite scary as I have nothing over there that can kill her.

Turn 4 – Khador:

I allocate 2 to Conquest, activate Sorscha and Feat. I cast Tempest to advance 6 and boost the hit on the Mage Hunter, killing her. Then I charge my own Winterguard that’s 20″ odd away to get back out of the killbox. My Winterguard kill the objective by advancing out of Ossyan’s feat bubble. The last Invictors in the zone are removed by CRAs and lucky sprays. A few floated rockets take out a couple of Stormfalls. Conquest shoots at Ossyan, boosts the hit and misses but the scatter is kind, I boost damage on him for a few points and kill another Stormfall next to him. The Bears continue their battle against the Infiltrators, who are whittled down to two remaining. I score 2, as I wasn’t able to get Sorscha into the zone. She’s about 4″ out and has a Boomhowler and Reinholdt blocking her.

Turn 4 – Retribution:

Not looking good for the Elves. He gives two to the Banshee. He considers whether he can get to Sorscha but she’s too far away for Ossyan at least. He puts his shot into Conquest to prevent charges and does a couple of points with a boosted damage roll. Due to Conquest’s placement, he’s got nothing left that can get into the zone. The Banshee advances and tries to slam the Boomhowler infront of Sorscha over her, but he’s about an inch out. The Infiltrators kill the last two bears. I go to 3.

Who's zone? CONQUEST'S ZONE!

Who’s zone? CONQUEST’S ZONE!

Turn 5 – Khador:

Conquest gets 3, advances, pummels the Banshee into dust. Sorscha walks into the zone and I win 5-1 on Scenario.

Thoughts:

We discuss the game afterwards and both agree that he waited a turn too long on the feat, which allowed the Conquest to bully the game. The Crit Devastation was great for me, as it meant Discordia never got to make that spray on my Winterguard. Once I’d removed most of the Stormfalls, the chances of him removing Conquest on Feat Turn were greatly reduced. Mark had me worried with his Mage Hunter Assassin, so much so that I considered giving up the 2 Killbox points in order to remove it, before remembering Tempest.

Next rounds are Drawn and it’s a Khador-off. I’m playing Killian, who’s bringing 3Butcher. Tune in shortly!

  1. Hurray for the motherland! Great battle report! Only thing is I think you meant to say that Sorscha casted Cyclone (tempest is the knock down spell) on Khador turn 4?
